Educational Technology - Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
Overview
This page will go over how to generate a link to a journal article and then post it inside your course.
NOTE:
As of December 2023, the Library has transitioned to OpenAthens as the authentication tool to access most library-subscribed online resources.
Links with the EZProxy prefix “https://eresources.library.mssm.edu:2048/loginurl=” will no longer work.
Instructions
1. Search the library resources and find the article you are interested in sharing.
The Library has transitioned to OpenAthens as the authentication tool to access most library-subscribed online resources.
To generate a link to a library-subscribed resource, you will need to use the OpenAthens Link Generator Tool*.
Note: The link generator tool does not work for all links. Remember to check if the library subscribes to the resource first as the generated link may not work.
Create a Link With OpenAthens Link Generator Tool
To use the OpenAthens link Generator:
Paste the URL for the resource you would like to use into the “Enter your links” field. (Do NOT include the EZProxy prefix anywhere in the link)
Click Enter.
The tool should generate an OpenAthens link to the resource that you could copy and paste wherever you need to use it (Blackboard, syllabus, email, etc.).
TIP: If you are using a link that contains the prefix “http://eresources.library.mssm.edu...”
You must remove the prefix before pasting the link into the generator tool.
2. In Blackboard, use the Build Content button to Create a URL.
Inside your course, notice how you have a + sign that will be available to you above or below any item.
Click on the + button
Then select Create
Select Link from the right menu, which will then give you the option of creating a URL.
3. Paste the URL of the journal article.
Change the first option to Visible to students.
Provide a Display Name for the weblink.
Insert the URL of the journal in the Link URL field.
Leave the “Open in a new window” checked ON.
TIP: If the link Generator tool does not work
You can manually add a special string of characters that allows authenticated users to access the library resources. Here is the string of text you need to add BEFORE the URL:
NEW Prefix: https://go.openathens.net/redirector/mssm.edu?url=
OLD Prefix: http://eresources.library.mssm.edu:2048/login?url=
The article is now available for others to see
If the viewer is on the Mount Sinai network, they will immediately have access to the article. If they are off-site, they will be asked to authenticate with their username and password, and then will have access
